Mufete is a cherished, traditional culinary masterpiece deeply rooted in the coastal culture of Luanda. Historically enjoyed as a celebratory weekend feast or a communal gathering meal, this classic dish beautifully showcases the rich marine bounty of the Atlantic. The heart of the meal features fresh, whole grilled fish, typically horse mackerel, sea bream, or croaker, perfectly seasoned and cooked over open charcoal flames.
The grilled fish is traditionally accompanied by a vibrant spread of side dishes, including boiled sweet potatoes, tender cassava, sweet boiled plantains, and palm oil beans (feijão de óleo de palma). The entire plate is brought together by a crisp, refreshing onion salsa (molho de mufete) made with finely chopped onions, chili peppers, lemons, and a splash of oil, cutting through the rich flavors and creating a perfectly balanced dining experience that defines the authentic flavor of Angolan hospitality.
